Over the last couple of months, we have seen more and more cyber attacks in the news. From denial of service attacks to ransomware, we simply can’t escape the effects that cybersecurity now has on our lives. In order to understand and defend against these attacks, it really does help to know the methodology around them. The upcoming generation of cyber professionals will be expected to come in and defend their organizations against malicious actors.
The thing about cyber (and pretty much all computer-related fields) is that it requires hands on practice to understand how attacks and defenses work. In short, learning cybersecurity and hacking is a hands on process. We can read as many books and articles about the field that we want, but in order to get the needed skills, we have to put in the practice. The problem with this is that practicing hacking skills involves setting up test environments and other things that newer cyber professionals may not be familiar with. And due to busy schedules and other commitments, some people just don’t have the time to set up test systems and would rather have something already available and ready to practice on.
I’m happy to announce that I have set up a SmithSec cyber range in which new cyber professionals can practice their hacking skills. For a low monthly price, you can have your own dedicated Kali Linux system that you can explore as well as Windows systems that you can attack. A Damn Vulnerable Web App (DVWA) server has also been set up for you to practice basic web application security attacks.
Some of the benefits to this are the following:
No setup on your end to practice hacking
A controlled environment that you can use to explore Kali Linux
A number of Windows systems joined to a fictional smithsec.net domain
The ability to practice your skills from anywhere
I plan on making tutorials for some of the attacks that you can perform in this environment. In any case, what are you waiting for? Go to https://www.smithsec.net/store/cyberrange-subscription and sign up today!
